28th Annual Festival Draws Large Crowds, Top Talent and Continues to Boost Local Economy

Clean up is now underway following the annual Lollapalooza Music Festival, which took place in Grant Park over the weekend. The four-day Festival featured music, food, art and showcased over 170 bands on eight stages, including Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino, Twenty Øne PilØts, The Strokes, Tame Impala, Flume, The Chainsmokers, and J Balvin.

The popular event attracted hundreds of thousands to the park over the weekend, as well as thousands more to other festival-related activities, including 55 official after-shows at venues throughout the city.

According to Festival organizers, Lollapalooza infused $247 million into the local economy in 2018 and has generated $1.445 billion in total, since 2010.

The City’s public safety agencies worked closely with event organizers to ensure a safe and secure event for attendees and residents. According to preliminary reports, there were 31 arrests, 12 administrative notices of violation (citations) and 116 medical transports over the four days, compared to 12 arrests, 34 administrative notices of violation and 160 medical transports in 2018.

Festival goers can view found inventory, submit a claim, and be more easily connected with their item(s). Additionally, today, Monday, Aug. 5, there will be a Lost & Found matched item pick up from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lolla Pop-Up Shop, 224. S. Michigan Avenue.

On-going Street Closures and Traffic Impacts:

  • Columbus Drive from Monroe to Roosevelt is expected to re-open to vehicular traffic prior to morning rush hour on Tuesday, Aug. 6
  • Ida B. Wells Drive, Balbo Drive, Jackson Drive – from Michigan Ave. to Columbus Drive – will also re-open prior to morning rush hour on Tuesday, Aug. 6

The following closures will remain in place while the festival stages and tents are disassembled:

  • Balbo Drive from Columbus Drive to Lake Shore Drive will be closed through Friday, Aug. 9
  • Organizers will re-open Jackson Boulevard from Columbus Drive to Lake Shore Drive for Thursday morning rush hour on Aug. 8 and will implement intermittent closures after rush hour concludes on Aug. 8 and Aug. 9 for equipment load-out.

 

Traffic control aides will continue to be deployed to facilitate traffic around the area.
