With the colder temperatures and winter approaching, the City of Chicago put a call out to residents to help new arrivals and homeless persons, including individuals, families, children and infants, with winter coats, shoes and warm clothing along with other essentials to safeguard them from the cold.

The Chicago Transportation Authority will also provide warming buses at the landing location and 16 police district locations for new arrivals. The city is also working with faith-based leaders to plan for emergency staging and shelter.

“We will continue exploring all options to provide temporary shelter, which includes working with aldermen, the State of Illinois and communities across the city in supporting efforts to move new arrivals indoors and off of the floors of O’Hare Airport and police district stations, the City of Chicago announced in a release.

The city will also continue to help provide immediate short-term shelter and resources and move anyone sleeping outdoors into shelters equitably distributed across the city.

Since August 31, 2022, Chicago has received over 19,000 asylum-seekers. A 2023 study by the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless also reveals that more than 68,000 Chicagoans are currently homeless.

Residents and organizations can collaborate with the city by connecting with various organizations and mutual aid groups supporting new arrivals. A list of those organizations can be found online at Chicago.gov/Support.
