DETROIT — Chrysler LLC says it will temporarily close four assembly plants, including one in Illinois, next week because of weak U.S. sales. The company says it will idle factories in Belvidere, Ill.; Brampton, Ontario; Sterling Heights, Mich.; and Detroit from Feb. 9-13. Spokesman Max Gates says it’s because of economic conditions. Additional closures are possible because the company reviews its production schedules every week. The Belvidere factor makes the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass and Patriot while the Brampton factory makes the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger. Sterling Heights Assembly builds the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring, and the Detroit factory on Conner Avenue builds the Dodge Viper. Chrysler sales were down 55 percent last month and 30 percent in 2008. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
