Chicago has another Children’s Museum, one that has proven so popular it is opening a new, greatly expanded home.
Pia Montes, who helped her mother, Peggy, open the Bronzeville Children’s Museum 10 years ago in south suburban Evergreen Park, said the museum’s new home on the South Side has nearly 10 times the space and three times as many exhibits as its former home.
Montes, on Monday, held a jiggling yellow blob representing five pounds of fat over a table of wide-eyed youngsters as part of an exhibit on food and healthy lifestyles. In other exhibits designed to make the museum interesting, children can beat on African drums, learn the history of jazz, or go on a “safari” complete with sound effects and animal pictures. Each activity weaves in elements of Black history.
The museum officially opens Tuesday.
