CHICAGO (AP) — The city of Chicago is issuing fewer parking tickets, but more vehicles are getting slapped with the Denver boot.

City officials say that’s because the crews that apply those wheel-locking devices are using technology to find eligible cars — those with three tickets of any age or two tickets one year or older. Revenue Director Bea Reyna-Hickey says the crews are using automated license readers that let them scan plates while the crews drive down the street.

City records show just under 1.66 million parking tickets were issued during the first eight months of this year. That’s down 11.6 percent from the same period a year ago.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that 44,581 boots were applied to vehicles from Jan. 1 through Aug. 31. That’s up by 7 percent from the first eight months of last year.
