Chicago Urban League President Cheryle Jackson tells The Associated Press she’ll announce her intention to run for President Barack Obama’s former U.S. Senate seat. Jackson plans to issue a statement later Monday announcing her plan to run for the seat U.S. Sen. Roland Burris now holds. Jackson says a formal announcement will follow in September. Jackson’s entry into the race would make her the most well-known Black candidate seeking the seat that’s been held by three of the four Black senators the nation has had since Reconstruction. Jackson will face fellow Democrat Alexi Giannoulias (jeh-NOO’-lee-ehs), who’s currently Illinois’ treasurer. The race has also attracted several Republicans, including high profile Congressman Mark Kirk, retired Judge Don Lowery, entrepreneur Eric Wallace and former Harvey Alderman John Arrington. Wallace and Arrington are also Black. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
