CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Teachers Union is planning a strike authorization vote.
The union on Friday announced that it is making plans for the vote. Union officials say state law requires that 75 percent of union members vote to authorize any work stoppage.
In a release Friday, the union says taking a strike authorization vote doesn’t mean that educators will immediately walk off their jobs, but the CTU says its teachers are "tired of being bullied, belittled and betrayed."
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has said teachers deserve a pay raise. And Emanuel added that negotiators are working with an independent arbitrator to accomplish both a raise and the avoidance of a strike.
