Chicago police Supt. Jody Weis says he’s not pleased with recent statistics showing the city nearing 500 homicides this year. Weis tells (a Chicago paper) in an interview that the police department is going to do whatever it can "to bring those numbers down." Chicago last saw 500 homicides in 2003. That’s an increase of between 16 percent and 17 percent in homicides. Weis says the city’s total number of homicides this year is the fifth lowest since 1965. He says his goal is to have no homicides. The Chicago City Council confirmed Weis as superintendent in January. Weis says this year was a year of transition and 2009 will be "a year of results."
