In the wake of a devastating surge in violence that has left the city in mourning, Mayor Brandon Johnson and the City of Chicago have issued a heartfelt statement extending condolences to the families and communities affected by the recent tragic events.
The city has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors by implementing a series of urgent measures.
In a bid to bolster security and provide immediate support to affected communities, the following initiatives were rolled out:
- Chicago Police Department (CPD): To enhance the city’s security presence, CPD officers who were previously scheduled for days off this weekend will now be on duty. This measure aims to maximize police presence and ensure a prompt response to incidents.
- Operation Wake Up: A community rally that occurred Friday evening at 71st Place & Woodlawn Ave to foster community bonding, support and healing in the wake of an incident where two women and a young boy were shot and killed in the early morning hours of July 4.
- Emergency Services Assistance Center (ESAC): Set to be activated on Tuesday, July 9, from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Fosco Park (1312 S. Racine Ave.), the ESAC will provide essential emergency support services to residents in need.
The City of Chicago remains steadfast in its resolve to take every necessary step toward creating a safer environment and supporting communities during these challenging times.
Community Response: Operation Wake Up
In a poignant response to the recent violence, the South Side community rallied on Friday following a harrowing shooting that claimed the lives of two women and a young boy on Thursday morning. The incident, which also left two boys wounded, marked a tragic start to a violent July 4th holiday weekend.
Dubbed “Operation Wake Up,” the rally held on Friday night aimed to promote healing within the community. The initiative was part of a broader effort to bring the community together and support those affected by the recent wave of violence. The rally provided a platform for residents to unite, share their grief, and find solace in collective solidarity.
