Chicago Public Schools has proposed a revamped budget after the Illinois state budget battle reduced the district’s funds by $42 million. Chief Executive Officer Ron Huberman said in a press release Wednesday that the school district still faces a deficit despite significant cuts. According to the press release, school officials announced in March that they would have a nearly half-billion dollar deficit for the coming year. Huberman says school officials made cuts by streamlining the Central Office while trying to maintain reasonable classroom sizes. The school district has recommended a 1.5 percent property tax rate increase to the Chicago Board of Education. Chicago Public schools is the third largest school district in the country. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
