In an effort to provide students and the community with meals during the summer, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has rolled out LunchStop.
Under the program, which started June 27, students and children, ages one to 18-years-old, attending summer programs are able to receive free meals. Students also do not have to be CPS student to receive free meals, according to a release, as breakfast and lunch are available while summer programs are taking place.
LunchStop will operate at 50 outdoor school locations until August 26th. Program duration and meal times vary by site.
“With the school year coming to a close, summer meals become increasingly important,” CPS wrote in a release. “Federally funded school meals provided through the National School Breakfast and National School Lunch programs, provide a key source of nutrition for students during the school year while summer break means that many students are left without adequate access to food.”
Last year, the program served an estimated 82,000 meals. The goal this year is to increase that number to 98,000.
