After a rash of police shootings, a surge in summer homicides and violence near the Taste of Chicago that left one man dead, Alderman Isaac “Ike” Carothers (29th) is demanding that Weis explain himself before the City Council.
Weis, he said, “needs a little bit of pressure. He hasn’t had much pressure. He’s had a honeymoon since he’s been here. But now is when the rubber meets the road. We’ve had shootings downtown, shootings in the neighborhood. We’ve got school teachers being killed, firefighters being shot, police officers being killed. Where does it stop? He’s certainly off to a rocky start.” Carothers is the city’s Police Committee Chairman. Carothers also claims that morale is low in the police department and Weis was wrong to drastically shake up district commanders soon after he was hired. Weis hasn’t been on the job long. The 50-year-old FBI veteran–who was handpicked by Mayor Richard M. Daley–started on February 1, 2008. He is the first outsider hired as Chicago’s police superintendent in four decades.
