shooting-investigationOn Thursday evening, at approximately 8:13 p.m., Chicago Police bike officers were alerted by a caller that a male was acting erratically in the 1800 block of S. Calumet. The gunfire exchange was in Fort Dearborn Park near Soldiers Field.
Officers approached the man and during the encounter the male offender fired shots in their direction, striking an officer in the leg causing a through-the-leg wound.   CPD returned fire striking the man in the lower body killing him.

A male officer was transported to Northwestern hospital in good condition and has a good prognosis, as a result of the officer’s partners applying a tourniquet on the wound.  The officer is 44-years-old and is a 16-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department.

The man killed is identified as Derek Love, 50 says a CPD spokesperson.

The suspect was also transported to Northwestern hospital where he was pronounced dead.  Officers recovered a weapon on the scene.  There were no other injuries reported.

Currently, the specifics of this incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation are being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority with the full cooperation of the CPD.

“Tonight the thoughts and prayers of Chicago are with our brave police officer who was shot answering a call as he worked to keep our streets safe,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement.
