Chicago police officials say stings carried out by officers over the holiday will prevent crimes in the coming year. The department says its organized crime division seized 25 guns as part of New Year’s Eve operations. Officials say officers used intelligence and strategy to find the assault weapons, including an AK-47 and Tec 9 assault pistol with a silencer. They also made 17 arrests. Division Chief Ernest Brown says officers recovered the weapons before offenders could use them in crimes. The department’s mobile strike force also made 13 arrests Wednesday, capturing eight guns and impounding one vehicle. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
