Chicago officials promote after-school programs

Mayor Richard Daley is urging parents to enroll their children in after-school programs.

CHICAGO (AP) — Mayor Richard Daley is urging parents to enroll their children in after-school programs.

The mayor said Monday that there are enough programs at schools, park districts and elsewhere that there is no reason any young person should be hanging out in the street.

Monday starts a two-week break for schools that are on a year-round schedule.

Chicago Public Schools chief Ron Huberman says parents or guardians can call 311 for more information on programs. They also may log on to www.afterschoolchicago.org.
