Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is standing behind his police superintendent, who is refusing federal court orders to turn over names of officers with five or more citizen complaints filed against them. Superintendent Jody Weis (WEES) is defying U.S. Magistrate Judge Maria Valdez’s demand that he turn over the list to attorneys suing the city of Chicago over a false arrest allegation. Daley said Wednesday lists of complaints registered against the officers should not be released with officers’ names on them. He said good police officers have complaints filed against them and should not have their careers jeopardized. U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman and Valdez ordered Weis to turn over the list last Friday. Weis said turning over the list will reduce morale and cause officers to hesitate to act in life and death emergencies.
