CHICAGO (AP) — A more than $30 million federal grant is going to help reconstruct a housing complex on Chicago’s South Side.
The federally subsidized Grove Parc Plaza has been a focus of scrutiny for years as it fell into disrepair. Former managers and local officials blamed each other for the demise of the more than 40-year-old development.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the grant on Wednesday.
HUD says the funds will be used to demolish and redesign the original Grove Parc site. It will eventually boast more than 900 units. Tens of millions of dollars are also being kicked into the redevelopment from other sources.
Chicago is one of just five U.S. cities to receive a total of $122 million in grants under HUD’s Choice Neighborhoods Initiative.
