Honor Athletes – Two world-class athletes, Leahseneth “Lacey” O’Neal, famed Olympic hurdler (1964 and 1972) and Dr. Robert A. Saddler, a youth track and field supporter and former teacher, principal and deputy superintendent in the Chicago Public School System, received their “just due” when Friends of Track and Field hosted its Fifth Annual East Lake Windy City Track & Field Banquet at the Parkway Ballroom. The event was presented to inspire some 200 teen athletes from Chicago high schools, including Dunbar, De LaSalle, Robeson, Harlan, DuSable and Simeon. The banquet preceded the Windy City Track Meet at Hansom Stadium.

 

 

 

 

O’Neal, a pioneer among noted female athletes who helped lead the passing of Title IX (a 1972 amendment that helped extend equal opportunities to women in sports) is also known for coining the word, “girlcott,” when she said Black female athletes would not be a part of the proposed boycott of the 1968 Olympics. She has a BS.Ed from the U. of Hawaii and a M.A. from the U. of Florida where she was the first Women’s Athletics coach.

 

 

 

 

During Saddler’s teen years, he ran track for the Wabash YMCA, was team captain for Wilson Jr. College and won the Illinois Junior College Conference championship half mile. He attended Loyola U. where he was captain of the track team and is a member of Loyola’s Track Hall of Fame and its Athletic Hall of Fame. After college he joined the University of Chicago Track Club and nearly qualified for the 1960 Olympic Trials at 800 meters. In the 1992-93 school year, he was offered the position of general superintendent of Chicago Public Schools but declined the position.

 

 

 

 

Elzie Higginbottom, president, East Lake Management (experts in property management, real estate development and construction) and Dr. Conrad Worrill, executive director of the Jacob Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies at Northeastern Illinois U., are co-founders of the Friends of Track & Field. In his youth, Higginbottom was ranked seventh fastest in world; both he and Worrill competed in track in high school.

Senate Citations – Congrats to Illinois’ State Senator Jaqueline Y. Collins (16th) who has received the coveted Blue Bow Award from Children’s Home & Aid, an organization that facilitates adoptions and provides services to troubled families and abused children. Sen. Collins was cited for her leadership in Englewood and surrounding communities where child abuse and neglect are some of the highest in Chicago And congrats also to Illinois’ State Senator Kwame Y. Raoul (13th). He’s joined the Chicago office of the law firm of Quarles & Brady as a partner in its Labor & Employment Group. In 2004 Raoul was appointed to fill the vacancy of U.S. Sen.
