An off-duty Chicago police detective charged with reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence has pleaded not guilty. Joseph Frugoli entered his plea Thursday on charges that he crashed his sport utility vehicle into a car parked along an expressway in April, killing two people. Twenty-three-year-old driver Andrew Cazares of Summit and 21-year-old Fausto Manzera of Chicago died. Prosecutors say Frugoli’s blood-alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit for drivers at the time of the accident. Officials say he allegedly tried to flee after being helped from his vehicle by a passerby but was quickly apprehended. The 41-year-old Frugoli has been relieved of his police powers. He’s free on $500,000 bail. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
