One of Chicago’s largest congregations isn’t exactly rolling out the red carpet for its new senior minister. Upon hearing that the Rev. Carlton Pearson has been named lead the Christ Universal Temple, more than 1,000 of the 6,000-member congregation signed a petition demanding a special meeting to talk about the appointment. The members are concerned that Pearson does not have the theological training to lead the church that uses a metaphysical interpretation of the Bible and focuses on things like positive thinking and meditation. Pearson was once one of the nation’s leading Pentecostal ministers until he angered many when he started teaching that everyone goes to heaven, including gays, Buddhists and Muslims. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
