Chicago CARES to Prevent Diabetes has announced its upcoming launch of over 12 additional National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) classes in various communities across Chicago.

These classes will be available both in-person and virtually within the next few weeks. With the support of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these evidence-based classes are offered free of charge to individuals who may be at risk for type 2 diabetes.

Prediabetes affects one in every three adults in the United States, yet the majority are unaware of their condition. Chicago CARES is committed to addressing diabetes disparities in local communities by providing support through lifestyle change programs. These programs specifically cater to individuals with prediabetes or those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, helping them adopt healthier habits. The classes provide participants with a trained lifestyle coach who offers guidance and support for an entire year. Additionally, participants benefit from a supportive community of individuals with similar goals and acquire the necessary skills to lose weight, increase physical activity, and effectively manage stress.

“The information the DPP classes provide is for your health. If you apply the information provided, you may not only change your life, but you may actually save your life,” said Kathleen, a graduate of the Chicago CARES NDPP.

The Chicago CARES project comprises a network of health centers and community-based organizations dedicated to offering the program, with a particular emphasis on serving the South and West Sides of Chicago. Erie Family Health Centers, the Chicago Lighthouse, and AgeOptions will launch new classes virtually.

Additionally, Sinai Urban Health Institute, Universidad Popular, Near North Health, American Indian Health Service of Chicago, Swedish Hospital, and Phalanx Family Services (in partnership with Roseland Hospital) will conduct classes in-person or in a hybrid format that combines in-person and virtual elements. These classes will be scheduled at various times throughout the day, providing interested participants with options, and will be conducted in both English and Spanish.

Silvia, a graduate of the Chicago CARES NDPP, expressed her satisfaction, stating, “I am happy because I am in control. I am in control of my life, I am in control of my health, and this is thanks to the Diabetes Prevention Program. I invite you to participate in it. You will not regret it, and you will feel much better regarding your health and your state of mind.”

Chicago CARES aims to fill all 12+ classes launching in June to capacity, potentially transforming the lives of over 180 individuals in Chicago. Since its inception nearly five years ago, Chicago CARES to Prevent Diabetes has enrolled more than 850 participants in over 75 NDPP classes throughout the city. The NDPP has been proven to reduce an individual’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%.
