CHICAGO It’s too chilly to dip a toe or two into Lake Michigan, but Chicago’s beaches are opening despite the weather and chilly water temperature.
The city has 26 miles of beaches. Chicago Park District spokeswoman Marta Juaniza says workers cleaned them up this week in preparation for Friday’s opening day.
One change this year: No butts on the beaches. Park District commissioners approved a beach smoking ban in October to reduce litter and secondhand smoke.
People caught lighting up within 15 feet of a beach can get a fine of up to $500.
The National Weather Service measured the water temperatures in Lake Michigan on Thursday at 58 degrees. (AP)
