The U.S. Department of Education is offering millions of dollars in grants to improve child literacy in the Chicago area.
Sen. Roland Burris’ office says the focus will be on programs that help children in low-income areas.
More than $4 million will go to support partnerships between Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic schools and the University of Illinois at Chicago. The money will help eight full-day preschool classrooms pay for literacy instruction.
Another $4 million will support a Chicago Public Schools’ early reading program that targets kids from low-income communities.
And more than $2 million slated to go to child care centers in Chicago Heights, Franklin Park and Melrose Park.
