CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A planned International African American History Museum in Charleston could incorporate a plaza near the spot where thousands of African slaves set foot in North America.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the plaza could highlight the location of a wharf on the Cooper River where thousands of slave ships tied up.

Mayor Joe Riley says the plaza would enlarge the chance to tell the story of the slave trade. Some historians think as many as 40 percent of the slaves brought to North America passed through Charleston.

The museum is being planned near the South Carolina Aquarium.

The size and cost are still being worked out and no date for has been set to start construction.
