CHICAGO (AP) — Attempted first-degree murder charges have been filed against a 20-year-old Chicago man in the shooting of a police officer.
Paris Sadler is accused in the shooting of Officer Del Pearson. The officer was shot in the chest above his vest during an alleged exchange of gunfire with Sadler late Monday.
Pearson and other officers were responding to a disturbance when they encountered four people believed to be violating curfew. Sadler allegedly ran away, with Pearson giving chase before shots were fired. Sadler was later arrested at his home.
In announcing the charges Wednesday, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Pearson lost a substantial amount of blood and was near death after the shooting..
Officials say Pearson remains hospitalized at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and his condition is improving.
