Chaos Erupts as City Council Approves Israeli Solidarity Resolution

On Friday, the City Council chambers were pure mayhem as debates erupted over a controversial resolution condemning the Hamas attack on Israel that occurred a week ago.

Israeli and Palestinian supporters were engaged in intense debates and, at one point, started shouting at each other when Mayor Brandon Johnson ordered the public to clear the chambers.

Nevertheless, Far North Side Ald. Debra Silverstein’s Israeli Solidarity Resolution was approved overwhelmingly by the city council, with only Ald. Rossana Rodriguez Sanchez casting the only no vote.

Those who oppose Silverstein’s resolution say that it does not condemn the actions of the Israeli government against the Palestinians.

“The pain and trauma that was rippled across this world is certainly felt right here in the city of Chicago and amongst all of us, and so we are grieving together as a city,” said Mayor Johnson in the midst of the tense proceedings.
