Celebrating Law Roach: Fashion Icon, Image Architect From the South Side

Within the realm of fashion’s most influential figures, few shine as brightly as Law Roach. As we celebrate Black History Month, it’s essential to spotlight this living legend who hails from the South Side of Chicago. His journey from being a local boutique owner to becoming an internationally acclaimed stylist and fashion icon is not just a story of success; it’s a narrative of resilience, creativity and passion.

Before diving into the fashion world, Roach studied psychology at Chicago State University. However, his true calling lay elsewhere, leading him to the vibrant realm of fashion. He opened his own vintage shop, Deliciously Vintage, with partner Siobahn Strong, which became a stepping stone to his future success in the industry.

Roach’s big break came unexpectedly when Kanye West visited Deliciously Vintage. This high-profile visit drew paparazzi and industry insiders from Los Angeles and Hollywood, catapulting Roach into the limelight. His keen eye for fashion and unique styling approach quickly made him a sought-after name in the industry.

A pivotal moment in Roach’s career was meeting with Zendaya in 2011. They were introduced through a mutual friend. At the time, Zendaya was starring in her first season of The Disney Channel’s “Shake It Up.”

This encounter would mark the beginning of a decade-long partnership that transformed both their careers. Zendaya, then a 14-year-old girl on her way to a movie premiere, sought Roach’s help in what to wear and thus began their iconic collaboration.

Roach and Zendaya’s synergy goes beyond typical celebrity-stylist relationships: they are family. They have built their careers focusing on emerging and independent designers, mirroring their own journey in the industry.

Roach says, “If you look at the things she wears, she still wears a lot of independent, emerging designers, Peter Do, Christopher Esber, Christopher John Rogers. We stick to that identity because it’s worked for us, and it actually feels really good.”

This approach helped Zendaya become a bona fide style star and showcased Roach’s commitment to uplifting new talent in the fashion world.

Law Roach’s remarkable work with high-profile clients, including Celine Dion, Tom Holland, Kerry Washington, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ariana Grande and Megan Thee Stallion, made him a household name.

His influence and expertise have earned him a spot in the top 10 celebrity stylists list, and he is noted as one of the highest-paid stylists in the world. Known as the “Image Architect,” Roach uniquely crafts and elevates his clients’ public personas through fashion.

In 2021, Roach graced the cover alongside Zendaya and Anya Taylor-Joy, two of his most notable clients, being named Stylist of the Year. This recognition is a testament to his exceptional talent and impact in the fashion industry. Furthermore, Roach was honored with the first inaugural Stylist Award at the 2022 CFDA Fashion Awards, a significant milestone recognizing his unparalleled contribution to fashion.

One of Roach’s remarkable achievements was his role as the executive producer of the Tommy Hilfiger X Zendaya fashion line. Launched during New York Fashion Week at the iconic Apollo Theater, Roach curated a Harlem Renaissance-themed show that was absolutely mind-blowing.

This event not only showcased his creative genius but also his ability to create immersive experiences that celebrate cultural heritage. In Nov. 2022, Law came home to Chicago to launch his Hervé Léger X Law Roach collection at Neiman Marcus Michigan Avenu, refining the iconic bandage dress.

Expanding Horizons

Law Roach, the fashion icon from Chicago

Beyond styling, Roach has expanded his horizons into television.

He served as a judge on “America’s Next Top Model” for Seasons 23 and 24, bringing his expertise and unique perspective to the aspiring models on the show. He was also a primary judge on HBO Max’s Vogue competition series, “Legendary,” for two years. His role on “Legendary” was particularly notable for showcasing his commitment to diversity and creativity in fashion. Additionally, Roach made a guest appearance as a judge on Season 20 of “Project Runway,” further cementing his status as a fashion authority.

After years of building his career at a breakneck pace, Law Roach is contemplating a slower, more reflective phase in his life.

When asked about his future plans, Roach expresses a desire to teach and continue sharing his story. His journey from the South Side of Chicago to the heights of global fashion is an inspiration, and his willingness to mentor the next generation of fashion creatives speaks volumes about his character and legacy.

I asked Law what advice he would pass on to those who come after him, and boldly, he stated, “Anything is possible!”.

From his early days at Chicago State University to becoming one of the world’s top stylists, Law Roach’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of hard work, vision and resilience. His global fashion journey is not just a success story but a source of inspiration for anyone daring to dream big.

As we celebrate Black History Month, we recognize and applaud Law Roach, a true living legend in the fashion world, for his extraordinary contributions and the path he’s paved for future fashion icons. Chicago kids do it best!
