Car hits two IDOT workers, killing one

Authorities say one of two Illinois Department of Transportation workers is dead after being struck by a vehicle at an interstate construction site on Chicago’s far South Side.

Lieutenant Luis Gutierrez of the Illinois State Police says the accident happened Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 57. Gutierrez says the driver attempted to flee the scene on foot, but was apprehended. Gutierrez says charges are pending. The workers were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where one was pronounced dead. The condition of the second injured worker was not immediately available. Their identities were not released. IDOT spokesman Mike Claffey says both workers were contractors. He says they were picking up barricades on the interstate’s shoulder when the accident happened.
