The primary election for Cook County board president is a year away but already one candidate has announced her plans to run.

Alderwoman Toni Preckwinkle (4th) is the only official candidate so far to declare her candidacy.

“After 18 years as a public servant, I think now is the time to make some changes,” she told the Defender. “My candidacy does not imply that I think President Todd Stroger is not doing a good job. My candidacy was born out of my desire to help the residents of Cook County.”

Cook County Board President Todd Stroger said he would decide by spring whether to seek re-election.

Stroger was elected board president in 2006 after entering the race when his father, incumbent John H. Stroger Jr., fell ill and later died.

Another possible candidate is Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court Dorothy Brown.

“Everything is on the table at this time including the county board race,” she said. “I have not decided what I plan to do, but I expect to make a decision soon.”
