Verbal Abuse Is Never Justified

When You Need Some Advice Don’t Ask Twice… Ask Dr. Karen

I received a letter this week from a college student that was very disturbing. His girlfriend has been verbally abusive to him. She criticizes him calls him names and finds fault whenever she can. I felt that I needed to reiterate the seriousness of this problem. I hope he got my wake up call and will take the advice I gave him to heart! Read this week’s column on Friday and find out what I said.
The subject of abuse is a topic that has been recognized as one of our most important social ills today. While abuse of women is widely known, it is not as widely recognized that men can be victims of emotional abuse too. Emotional abuse of men is more common than we think. About 40% of cases involve violence of women against men. Male victims of emotional abuse may experience partners that yell and scream, insult and demean them, or even treat them like a child or servant. This abuse strips a person of his self-worth and dignity.
Like women many men stay in these relationships for various reasons. He may not have the strength to leave or he may believe he deserves the abusive treatment. These kinds of relationships should never be justified. It is never the fault of the one abused. You should let your abuser know that their words are hurtful. Set boundaries on what you will and will not accept. Always have a support system and seek counseling if the abuse continues. If things don’t change then exit stage left and let the curtain close!
