CALUMET CITY, Ill. (AP) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded nearly $190,000 to a suburban Chicago fire department. The website for Calumet City’s fire department says the department has almost 50 employees, including 27 firefighters. The department runs about 6,000 calls per year out of two stations. Sen. Dick Durbin says the federal grant will be used for operations and safety. The funding is provided through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters grant program. The program has awarded about $4 billion for equipment, training and vehicles since 2001. Calumet City has a population of about 36,000 and is located nearly 20 miles south of Chicago.
