A single gunshot that pierced the window of a student-filled school bus Wednesday morning on the West Side didn’t hit any of the students. As a little more than a dozen sixth grade students from the Rodney D. Joslin Campus of Perspectives Charter Schools sat on the bus in the 2200 block of West Cermak Road shortly after 11 a.m., a shot rang out, struck one of the bus’ windows and exited another, police said. Three of the students –– ages 11 and 12 –– suffered injuries from the broken glass. The group was heading back to Perspectives after doing community service at a day care center. “These kids were out serving our community. These are our student leaders. They should never have to face that,” said outgoing Chicago Public Schools CEO Arne Duncan, who was named the U.S. education secretary nominee. Police said the bus was not targeted and believed the shooting may be a result of a verbal altercation between two people that occurred nearby, minutes before the incident.
