SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The fair must go on, even with the economy struggling and the state budget slashed. The Illinois State Fair opens Friday with higher prices, cheaper entertainment and staff cutbacks, but officials still hope it will draw large crowds as families look to have fun near home. Manager Amy Bliefnick says last year’s fair was promoted as a "staycation," and attendance increased 25 percent. The fair runs from Aug. 14 to Aug. 23. Admission prices have risen to $5 for adults and $2 for children. The headline acts include Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kelly Clarkson and Montgomery Gentry. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
