COLLINSVILLE, Ill. — The Martin Luther King Bridge that crosses the Mississippi River linking East St. Louis and St. Louis is going to close to allow construction of a barrier to make it safer. The Illinois Department of Transportation says the bridge is expected to be shut down sometime later this year to build a barrier designed to reduce crossover crashes. The department says the bridge will have to be closed for a total of 12 days but that the project may be split into two phases. The barrier will leave the bridge with one westbound lane and two eastbound lanes. Officials say that will add a few minutes to the westbound commute but won’t affect the eastbound commute. The project will cost an estimated $2.5 million, to be paid by Illinois, Missouri and the federal government. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
