The Chicago Urban League continues its work in economic empowerment with new additions to its leadership. Herman Brewer is the Urban League’s executive vice president, Joyce Carson is chief financial officer and vice president of finance and administration, and Leslie Bardo is senior vice president for external affairs.

Brewer will serve as acting CEO in the absence of Cheryle Robinson Jackson, who is on leave.

Since shifting its focus to economic development in 2007, the Urban League has gained national recognition as a civil rights organization that builds businesses, creates jobs, prepares individuals for the workforce, and issues key research on the barriers to success facing Chicago’s African American community, organization leaders say.

Brewer, who joined the Urban League staff in July, is a specialist in community and economic strategy with over 20 years of experience in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. In his role as executive vice president, Brewer manages the operations of all Chicago Urban League program areas including the Entrepreneurship Center, Education, Human Capital Development, Housing, Policy and Research, and the Center for Talent Development (formerly Workforce Development and Diversity). As Acting CEO, Brewer will assume all roles and responsibilities of the president and CEO including: leading the strategic vision of the Urban League, building on and creating partnerships in the community, serving as the lead spokesperson for the Urban League, and representing the Urban League in key public venues.

Brewer comes to the Urban League from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
