Violinist Brandon Keith Brown was thrilled when he was selected by the Vienna Philharmonic to become a resident at the Salzburg Festival this year and chosen by conductor Lorin Maazel to serve as his apprentice. Brown also performed at The 2010 Castleton Festival and in 2009 David Zinman selected him as a fellow in the American Academy of Conducting. As the only United States candidate, Brown will compete in October as one of 16 semi-finalists in the 2011 Lovro Matacic International Competition For Young Conductors.
Brown was a finalist for the 2011 Dvorak’s New World Symphony and Tanglewood fellowships. He has served as Cover conductor for the Baltimore Symphony and earned a master’s degree from the Peabody Institute under Gustav Meier, where he won the Peabody Career Grant. The conductor and violinist studied at Oberlin and Northwestern University with Roland and Almita Vamos. During the fall, he begins an appointment as associate conductor for the Omaha Area Youth Orchestras.
WAR AND ROY AYERS SLATED to star in Hyde Park Summer Festival Saturday and Sunday on 53rd Street between Harper and Kimbark Avenues from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Children’s activities are from noon to 4 p.m. in Nichols Park. RAVINIA FESTIVAL IN HIGHLAND PARK INTRODUCES A Whole Lotta Liszt featuring husband-and-wife pianists Misha and Cipa Dichter performing compositions of Liszt. Misha will then be joined by the Harlem String Quartet performing Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-Flat Major. The performance Thursday will be in the Martin Auditorium at 8 p.m.
UNIVERSAL ALLEY JAZZ JAM continues each Saturday through August 13 in the plaza of the Black United Fund Building, 1809 E. 71st Street, from 2 p.m. until dusk. Entertainers include Jimmy Ellis, Phil Kelan Cohran, Ari Brown, Ancestral Resurrection Ensemble, Kirk Brown Trio, Generation Big Band, Honey Blo, Poet Cheryl Hunt, Griot Oba King and others.

THE BROADWAY REVIVAL OF WEST SIDE STORY performs at the Cadillac Theatre, 151 W. Randolph St., through August 14. Performance schedule is Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m.; Wednesdays at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.
