On Saturday night, Oct. 26, leaders from across Chicago gathered at Cinespace Studios to celebrate the life and career of former U.S. Congressman Bobby L. Rush. The Legacy Gala, a tribute to Rush’s decades of public service, brought together a mix of politicians, activists, and longtime supporters to honor his journey from Black Panther co-founder to one of the city’s most influential political figures.
“When I retired, I never really celebrated my career with my community. I’m excited to gather with all the people I’ve impacted and worked with over the years and reflect on my journey,” said Rush.
Rush’s path, beginning in the civil rights movement and stretching to nearly 30 years in Congress, was a focal point of the event.
The night also featured appearances from notable figures, including former NBA star Isiah Thomas and Fredrika Newton, widow of Black Panther Party co-founder Dr. Huey P. Newton. Rev. Wheeler Parker, cousin of Emmett Till, added his voice to those paying tribute to Rush’s leadership in the fight for civil rights.
But the evening wasn’t just about looking back. Rush used the occasion to announce a new project, the capstone of his life’s work. While details remain under wraps, the initiative promises to ensure his legacy continues, focused on community empowerment and social justice.
Entertainment for the evening included performances by Joan Collaso and the Family, as well as the Leo High School Boys Choir, lending the gala a heartfelt and celebratory tone.
Rush, who now serves as Vice-Chairman of the Illinois Democratic Party and as an adjunct professor for the Bard College Prison Initiative Program, continues his work in various fields, including pastoring at the Beloved Community Church in Bronzeville. His commitment to serving others remains central to his life’s mission.
As the night came to a close, it was clear that Bobby Rush’s legacy is far from finished—he’s just entering a new chapter.
