Blue Island Park District and SIS Celebrate Scholarship Recipients and Youth Empowerment

Tonya R. Howard, Commissioner of the Blue Island Park District, recently welcomed the popular Sisters Investing in Souls (SIS) to the District. The prominent organization recognized several students who have achieved academic excellence and credible citizenship. Commissioner Howard and the SIS organization are also grateful to Blue Island Alderman Teddy Ruthenberg for his participation in this endeavor.

“We are grateful to the SIS organization for all they do to enhance the upward mobility of our youth. The thousands of dollars they raise annually have greatly benefitted hundreds of students who desire to climb the ladder of success through education. “says Commissioner Howard.

Sisters Investing in Souls (SIS) was founded on Feb. 2, 2008, by five African American women who understand and recognize family and college students’ financial responsibility. The membership comprises women whose friendships with one another have spanned several decades. These women have attended various colleges and recognize the importance of higher education.

On Jan. 20, SIS announced their 2025 Scholarship Award recipients:

  • Dellvyn Williams, Kenwood Academy High School – $1,000
  • Kyziah Lewis, Evergreen Park Community High School – $1,000
  • Christopher Watkins, Kenwood Academy High School– $1,000
  • Raegan Jones, Perspectives Rodney D. Joslin Campus – $1,000
  • Trinity Montgomery, Howard University – $500

“We are proud of these young people and wish them success and a smooth transition into this next chapter of their lives. SIS remains dedicated to our next generation,” says SIS Member Cynthia Ellis.

The goal of SIS has been to impact the lives of young adults by providing financial assistance and support for their educational journey. This supplement can assist with tuition, book fees, living/travel expenses, lab fees or other miscellaneous expenses. SIS understands that providing students with the necessary tools and equipment can make a significant difference in their ability to succeed academically.

SIS is a non-profit organization with 501(c)3 status. Since 2008, they have provided over $100,000 in financial assistance to college-bound young adults in our community. They have success stories of former recipients that are a testament to the lasting impact of our efforts.
