An 18-year-old man faces between 45 years to life in prison when he is sentenced today in Cook County Criminal Court for the 2007 murder of a Chicago Public Schools student. Blair Holt, a 15-year-old honor roll student at Percy L. Julian High School on the South Side, was fatally shot on a Chicago Transit Authority bus after trying to protect a female student from being shot. Neither Holt nor the female friend was the intended target, according to Chicago police. Police said the shooting was gang-related, but Holt and the female he protected were not in a gang. Michael Pace pled guilty June 19 to first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, according to Tandra Simonton, a spokesman for the Cook County State’s Attorney office. And 17-year-old Kevin Jones, who allegedly supplied Pace with the semiautomatic weapon used in the shooting, pled guilty in June to conspiracy to commit murder. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
