Blago prosecutor tells of alleged $1 million offer

Prosecutors say they have a witness who could testify about an offer to raise $1 million for former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich if Jesse Jackson Jr. was appointed to the Senate.

CHICAGO (AP) — Prosecutors say they have a witness who could testify about an offer to raise $1 million for former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich if Jesse Jackson Jr. was appointed to the Senate. Prosecutor Christopher Niewoehner told Judge James Zagel that Rajinder Bedi, a former state official under Blagojevich, would tell of the offer allegedly made by businessman Raghuveer Nayak with Jackson present. Nayak testified that he later told Robert Blagojevich, the governor’s brother, that Nayak wanted Jackson in the seat and could raise a lot of money. Zagel barred prosecutors from asking about the amount or other specifics of the alleged offer. Blagojevich, 53, has pleaded not guilty to scheming to sell President Barack Obama’s former Senate seat. Jackson, Nayak and Bedi are not charged with wrongdoing. Copyright 2010 The Associated Press.
