EURweb–Recently, the RNC (Republican National Committee) demanded and received an apology from Ebony senior editor Jamilah Lemieux for “attacking” the committee’s deputy press secretary Raffi Williams for his “race, heritage or political views.”
But just how the RNC rallied behind Williams, Black Twitter is doing the same for Lemieux.
In a note from RNC chair Reince Preibus, words like “civil rights” and “journalistic Objectivity” were used — it sounded like a world where white people were oppressed and black people weren’t.
This incident started with a tweet from Lemieux talking about her dislike with a new black conservative magazine by Dr. Ben Carson and Armstrong Williams.
A response from Williams followed — talking about “diversity of thought.”
Lemieux was not feeling what Williams (who she thought was a white dude) had to say about the matter and tweeted:
“Oh great, here comes a White dude telling me how to do this Black thing. Pass.”
After realizing her mistake, she tweeted an apology.
“I was looking at your avi without blowing it up. I apologize for that. However, I care about NOTHING you have to say,” she tweeted.
But that wasn’t enough for the RNC. In response Ebony wrote,
“EBONY acknowledges Senior Editor Jamilah Lemieux’s lack of judgment on her personal Twitter account and apologizes to Raffi Williams and the Black Republican community.”
Although Lemieux had to leave the conversation, the hashtag #StandWithJamilah began to trend on Twitter.
And as for the RNC, they accepted the apology.
But if the RNC are so concerned with having “greater engagement and understanding between the Republican Party and the black community” as said in the note, then maybe the should be focusing on legislation and media they support that is in direct opposition to those goals…. cough… cough… Fox News.
And maybe not so much on an editor who was expressing her opinion yet apologized simply for her lack of judgment on Williams’ race.
