Several public school teachers filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against the Chicago Public Schools alleging the “turnaround” policy of the school district’s Renaissance 2010 initiative has resulted in discrimination against African-American teachers.

Five years ago, Mayor Richard M. Daley launched Ren 2010 to raise the number of high-quality educational options in neighborhoods across the city by 2010.

Some schools that have been turned around under the policy have seen African-American educators replaced with white ones, according to the complaint filed under Title VII last month by the Caucus of Rank and File Educators. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination by covered employers on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

A total of eight schools are turnarounds: Copernicus, Fulton, Harvard, Howe, Morton and Sherman elementary schools, and Harper and Orr high schools.

Copernicus, Fulton, Harper, Howe and Morton are a sampling of schools, according to the caucus, that have seen a decrease in minority teachers.
