A dispute between black firefighters and Philadelphia’s firefighters’ union over alleged anti-minority sentiment has been settled.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A dispute between black firefighters and Philadelphia’s firefighters’ union over alleged anti-minority sentiment has been settled.
Club Valiants Inc. and the local branch of the International Association of Fire Fighters say they’re working to thaw a frosty relationship that prompted a 2009 civil rights lawsuit involving the NAACP.
The suit alleged harassment and abuse of black firefighters and said the leadership of the union was overwhelmingly white. The black firefighters had complained of racially hostile remarks and material being posted in the union’s online chat room.
In a joint statement released Wednesday, the parties say they’ve agreed to work together to "foster respect, unity and diversity among their members."
