The Rev. Jesse Jackson and Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court Dorothy Brown were among a handful of community and political leaders who held a news conference Thursday at Rainbow/PUSH headquarters to voice their objection to Ron Huberman being chosen as the new public schools chief. “I have nothing against Mr. Huberman, but education is not his forte,” Jackson told the Defender. “The superintendent should be knowledgeable, motivating, competent and experienced. And there are plenty of qualified candidates within the Chicago Public Schools.” Barbara Eason-Watkins, chief education officer for CPS, was among the candidates considered for the position. She was also recommended by former CPS boss, Arne Duncan, who resigned to become the U.S. Secretary of Education. On Tuesday, Mayor Richard M. Daley announced that he was appointing Huberman, president of the Chicago Transit Authority, as the new chief executive officer for CPS. The mayor said despite Huberman’s lack of teaching experience, he is a good manager and that is what CPS needs to remain successful. But Jackson said that’s what chief financial officers and chief operating officers are for.
