Black History Month celebrations include art, cultural recognitions

Black History Month cultural events occurring all around town

CHICAGO MUSICAL ASSOCIATION/National Association Negro Musicians was established in March 12, 1919 at the home of Nora Holt, 4405 S. Prairie Ave. President Barbara Wright-Pryor and the Chicago Music Association is hosting the Chicago Music Association Choral Festval in a concert at the South Shore Cultural Center, 70th and South Shore Drive, February 21 at 4 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Keith Hampton.

BLACK HISTRY MONTH at the South Shore Opera Company will feature it’s annual salute to Black music with concert of spirituals, songs and arias written by African American composers, February 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. Shore Dr. in the Roberson Theater.

MUSIC MONDAYS at eta Square, 7558 S. South Chicago Ave. features Milton Suggs in a Concert instrumental and vocal music at 7 p.m. hosted by Sue Conway, Maven of the Microphone and WVON Radio personality Cliff Kelley. Admission is $15 ($12 for groups of 10 individuals or more.

The theater company also premieres “Fathers & Sons” by Michael Bradford and directed by Kemati J. Porter Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. The theater continues its series of female directors through April 4. Admission is $30.

BUDDY GUYS LEGEND, 752 S. Wabash is featuring vocalist Janiva Magness introducing her new CD, “What Love Will Do” Friday at 11 p.m. Admission $15.

ARTWERKS COMMUNITY THEATRE & Kuki Boatwright & Friends present blues and jazz, R&B live band, poets featuring Art Brown, Kirk Brown, Cheryl Hunt and Ibo Williams King features Black Heritage/Culture Series February 19 at the Velvet Lounge, 67 E. ORGANIC GROOV, 416 S. Clark St., features Mark Madsen, vocalist and guitarist and Close Up2 with saxophonist Harlan Jackson. Discount parking at 432 S. Clark and 412 S. Dearborn. Jazz action continues Wednesday and Thursday at 7, 8:30 and 10 p.m.; on Friday sets jump off at 8, 10 and midnight. On Saturday the show time is at 10 p.m., 11:30 and 1 a.m.

RONNIE BAKER BROOKS stars Friday at the Beverly Arts Center, 2407 W. 111th St. Admission is $25. Ronnie Baker Brooks is the son of Lonnie Brooks.

BLACKSTAR PROJECT encourages fathers to take their daughters to the Daughter/Dance or Daddy/Daughter Dinner Saturday at the Black Star Ball Room, 3509 S. King Dr., Suite 2B, from 3 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Admission $20 per couple and $5 per extra “date.” Call Camilla at 773-285-9600 to RSVP.

SMOOTH JAZZ VALENTINE’S SHOW stars Nick ColioinnΘ and Gerald Albright Saturday for two shows at 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. at the DuSable Museum of African History in the Illinois Black Legislators’ Auditorium, 740 E. 56th Place.

JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI CHAPTER features a celebration of its Valentine scholarship benefit “For the Love of Blue” featuring a jazz and blues brunch Saturday at the Harambee House, 11901 S. Loomis.
