The Black Fire Brigade celebrated its sixth anniversary on Saturday, June 15, by opening their new BFB Educational Center.
The Black Fire Brigade Training Center event was a significant milestone in their mission to train and support the next generation of first responders, a mission that has already seen 700 students placed in critical positions as fire department personnel, EMS providers, and ER technicians in various local hospitals.
Since starting in 2018, led by Lieutenant Quention Curtis and Terri Winston, the BFB has been dedicated to progress and hope in the fire rescue and EMS fields. Their first major success came in August 2018, when a fundraising drive enabled 40 young adults to begin Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training. By January 2019, these students had secured vital fire and emergency services roles.
This growth highlights their commitment to promoting diversity and excellence among first responders, ensuring that African-American youth have access to professional opportunities and that services meet the needs of diverse communities.
The grand opening celebrated past achievements and called for ongoing community support. Attendees included local leaders, community members, and key supporters of the BFB.
Winston spoke to the crowd, emphasizing the need for community involvement and continuous support in shaping the future of public safety.
“We are here to celebrate the incredible strides we’ve made and to reaffirm our commitment to training the next generation of first responders,” said Lieutenant Curtis. “Our new educational center is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision of excellence and service.”
The BFB invites those who could not attend to support their mission by visiting their website and contributing to their educational programs. As the BFB grows, they remain committed to making a lasting impact on public safety and community resilience, one first responder at a time.
