LUSAKA, Zambia — Zambia’s Catholic bishops and the International Press Institute are condemning the arrest on obscenity charges of a newspaper editor who says she was trying to draw attention to the consequences of a health workers’ strike. Chansa Kabwela, editor of the independent Post, was arrested last week after e-mailing pictures of a woman giving birth in the streets to policy makers and aid groups. The Post never published the photos. Kabwela says she wanted to make key Zambians aware of the impact of the strike, which ended last month. In separate weekend statements, the bishops condemned "violence against the media," and the International Press Institute accused the government of trying to intimidate Kabwela.
