Bids slowing in Ill. for health insurance program

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois has received more than 1,800 applications for a new program for uninsured people with medical problems. About one-third have been approved for coverage. Illinois Department of Insurance Director Michael McRaith said Monday 85 applicants have been denied — most because they failed to meet a requirement they be uninsured for six months. Many applicants must still send completed materials before coverage can begin. Others haven’t made a required premium payment. The federally funded program is part of the nation’s new health law. Other states are seeing far fewer applicants than Illinois. California has received fewer than 450 applications. McRaith says applications in Illinois have slowed, but his department is trying to get the word out. Illinois has money for between 4,000 and 6,000 people. Copyright 2010 The Associated Press.
