President Joe Biden is set to nominate a history-making fighter pilot to serve as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

On Thursday (May 25), Biden is expected to unveil Air Force Gen. CQ Brown Jr. as a potential replacement for Army Gen. Mark Milley, who is retiring in October as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, per Fox News. The chairman is the highest-ranking officer in the nation and serves as the senior military advisor to the president, the defense secretary, and the National Security Council.

According to a senior administration official, Biden believes Brown will help modernize U.S. airpower as the Pentagon moves to keep up with growing cyber war, space, nuclear, and hypersonic threats.

Brown has racked up more than 3,000 flight hours as a fighter pilot and commanded at every possible level in the Air Force as well as in joint commands in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Biden’s nominee has made history throughout his career, becoming the first Black Air Force chief of staff three years ago.

If Brown is confirmed by the Senate, the Pentagon’s top military and civilian positions will be held by Black Americans for the first time in history.
