Bicycle, motorist safety efforts start in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) — Summertime is near and that means more bicyclists on the roads in Chicago.

The city says its aldermen are partnering with police to host 75 bicycle and motorist education events through September. This year officials say they will focus on urging bicyclists to use headlights at night and to have both bicyclists and motorists obey traffic safety laws.

The Share the Road Campaign also will focus on motorists who pass cyclists without the required minimum 3-foot clearance. Other topics will include cyclists who disobey traffic signals and motorists who park in bike lanes or open vehicle doors in a cyclist’s path.

The Bicycling Ambassadors also are a part of the program. The team of bicycle safety and education experts appears at hundreds of events a year.
